Welcome to Podcasting for Solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in 5 minutes or less. Today's question is, do I really need to edit my podcast?

And this question comes from Kathleen, an aspiring podcaster who recently attended one of my community events. My short answer is No, you absolutely do not have to edit your podcast. There are no hard and fast rules in podcasting, but most of the time you probably want to. Now, some people do prefer a much more natural and casual style, so if they misspeak, then they might just correct themselves in real time and keep going. That is not wrong, and you are allowed to have a more conversational, unpolished style if that fits you and your brand. But most of the online business owners that I chat with want a more polished, professional final product. And so that means that there are usually at least a few things that you'll want to cut out, because even if you're reading from a script, things still happen. You might stumble over your words, say the wrong thing, pause for too long, repeat yourself, or decide halfway through a sentence that you want to say it a bit differently.

So no, editing is not mandatory, but some level of editing is typically desired. The good news is that editing does not have to be super fancy where you are editing out every single um, and all of the little saliva noises, just cutting out the big stumbles and any extra long pauses is enough editing. So if the thought of editing has been stressing you out, you could choose not to do it at all, or you could do some light edits and just keep it simple. The latter is my recommendation. If you have a podcasting question, click the Send Me Your Question link in the episode description and I'll answer it in an upcoming episode.

Until next time, happy podcasting.
